Research at the IES focuses mainly on factors that increase life expectancy among the general population. Within the two research sections, epidemiology and population-based interven-tion, one goal is the development and scientific evaluation of preventive measures to decrease common diseases and their respective risk factors. The IES puts special emphasis on interventions towards a healthy life style: free from tobacco smoke, free from alcohol risk drinking, a healthy diet and appropriate exercise. The staff of the currently running research is multidisciplinary. The publications add evidence to the prevention of common diseases and their etiology. A focus of the courses taught is on behavior change at the population level.
