Greifswald's History of General Practice

The chair of social hygiene ("Hygiene auf dem Lande") held by Prof. Herbert Knabe from 1960-1983 can be regarded as the predecessor of general practice at the University of Greifwald. He was the co-founder of the Society for General Practice in the GDR and politically enforced the principle of general practice and family medicine.

1992 - 2000 Honorary activity of MR Dr. med. Renate Thonack: establishment of a link with internal medicine; official contact em. Prof. Dr. Günther Kraatz: establishment of the first independent structures of general practice at the University of Greifswald .

2000 - 2003 Official establishment of the functional area "General Practice". Head: PD Dr. med. Rainer Möllmann; Scientific fellow: Dr. med. Jens Thonack.

2003 - 2011 Head: Dr. Jens Thonack. Establishment of a network of teaching physicians; introduction of OSCEs.

October 2011 First chair of general practice in Greifswald: Prof. Dr. Jean-François Chenot, MPH.

December 2021 Dr. Jens Thonack receives an honorary professorship.
