According to the licensing regulations (Approbationsordnung), at least one clerkship (30 calendar days) must be completed with a general practitioner (family doctor or internist practicing as a general practitioner). The clerkship is part of the medical studies but must be organized independently by the student. Practices can be chosen freely.
Information Sheet on the Clerkship (pdf)
Time spent in block practicals (Blockpraktikum) cannot be credited towards the clerkship requirement, and vice versa!
Special insurance is generally not necessary.
Throughout the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (Kassenärztliche Vereinigung) has compiled a search function for practices that offer clerkships.
For clerkships in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, funding is available from the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians. The application must be submitted to the KVMV before the start of the clerkship! (Application)
Clerkships abroad are possible. Recognition is the responsibility of the State Examination Office (Landesprüfungsamt). If in doubt, it is advisable to inquire there beforehand whether a clerkship will be recognized. There is no accident insurance coverage abroad, and the need for liability insurance should be clarified.
The clerkship should be certified using the certificate template available for download here.
A positive experience in the general practice is the best advertisement for future generations.
The clerkship is part of the medical studies, does not require university approval, and can be offered by any general practice. The clerkship is not remunerated.
The activities of a clerk (Famulus) are covered by the practice owner's liability insurance, but an individual insurance check is recommended. While working in the practice, the clerk is considered an assistant to the practice owner. Therefore, they are insured against occupational diseases and accidents by the German Social Accident Insurance (Berufsgenossenschaft für Gesundheitsdienst und Wohlfahrtspflege). As registration with the German Social Accident Insurance is retroactive, it is not necessary to inform them in advance.
