Functional Disturbances and Inflammations of the Middle and Inner Ear

Main symptoms, ear secretion, pain, hearing loss

Inflammatory and noninflammatory processes in the auditory canal and middle ear can interfere with the conveyance of sound to the inner ear and, in addition to hearing impairment, can lead to dizziness and ear noises (tinnitus). Secretion from the ear is a frequent main symptom for inflammatory processes. Prompt (in some cases also emergency) treatment is required: Particularly chronic inflammations can, for example, spread to the labyrinth, the facial nerve, brain membranes or even to the brain itself.

Treatment / Therapy

Microscopic examination of the ears and determination of the location and extent of the hearing impairment using state-of-the-art examination methods enable individualised therapy planning. Endoscopy of the nose and nasopharynx will also be performed, and if necessary imaging will be undertaken. While drugs are usually sufficient for acute inflammation, chronic inflammation can usually only be remedied via surgery. Comparatively new is the minimally invasive method of balloon dilatation of the auditory tube in the case of tube ventilation disturbances. Essentially, one of the essential treatment targets is maintaining and, if possible, improving hearing function.
If hearing is so severely restricted that language is no longer sufficiently well understood even with hearing aids, we will check as to whether provision of a cochlear implant system (inner ear prosthesis, CI) is effective. A CI leads to improved understanding of language, very often even with single-sided deafness. Active middle ear implants or surgically implanted bone-conduction hearing aids are available for other, less pronounced special cases.
