Paediatric Oncology, Haematology and Hemostaseology

The paediatric haematology and oncology department of the clinic for child and adolescent medicine is a proven centre for the diagnosis and treatment of hemato-oncological diseases of children and adolescents. The most common diseases in paediatric oncology include leukemia and neuroblastoma.

Treatment / Therapy

ONCOLOGY
The treatment of leukemias, brain tumours, solid tumours, embryonal tumours and blood disorders is performed according to the standards of The Society for Paediatric Oncology and Haematology (GPOH).
In addition to multimodal chemotherapy, the therapeutic options include hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, radiotherapy, and nuclear medicine therapy approaches, in particular MIBG therapy in patients with a neuroblastoma, as well as surgery in cooperation with the clinics for paediatric surgery and neurosurgery at the Greifswald University Hospital (UMG).
A particular focus of the clinic is treatment of the neuroblastoma via new immunotherapy methods.

HAEMATOLOGY, HEMOSTASEOLOGY
In our specialist outpatient service, we take care of children and adolescents with congenital and acquired anaemias (e.g. spherocytosis, thalassemia, sickle cell anaemia), diseases of other blood cell lines (e.g. thrombocytopenia and granulocytopenia) and bone marrow failure. A further focus is diagnosis and therapy for coagulation disorders in childhood and adolescence. Particular mention should be made of the von Willebrand disease and haemophilia.
Treatment includes medication, transfusions, plasmapheresis and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
All treatments in the area are generally long-term therapies, must be carefully controlled, and range from nine months to two years depending on the disease. Aftercare for oncological diseases can span several years.
To this end, in addition to an inpatient area, the UMG also has a day station and a specialist outpatient service.
