Paediatric rheumatology

Paediatric rheumatology is mainly concerned with chronic inflammatory diseases of the musculoskeletal system in childhood and adolescence. The diseases can be divided into three grou

  1. Non-inflammatory musculoskeletal pain
  2. Rheumatic inflammatory diseases and
  3. other children's rheumatologic diseases.
  4. >
  5. The main symptom is chronic pain that cannot be attributed to any obvious cause, and recurring fever. New sickness incidences per year amount to 1:10,000. Childhood rheumatism can occur from infancy to young adulthood.

Treatment / Therapy

All child rheumatological diseases are treated in the clinic for paediatrics and youth medicine in accordance with the illness progression. The drug treatment includes administration of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressants or biologics. Most of the treatments can be undertaken on an outpatient basis.
In the case of severe illness progressions which, for example, require treatment with biologics, the patient will be hospitalised for a few days. This therapy component affects different regulatory mechanisms of the body in a targeted manner, and offers the possibility of noticeably reducing or even stopping the disease symptoms and late effects of many inflammatory rheumatic diseases. The children's clinic cooperates on an interdisciplinary basis with the eye clinic, dermatology clinic, and with the orthopaedic and physiotherapy departments of the Greifswald University Hospital. With the help of the offered therapies, 90-95% of the children and adolescents treated can experience a significant improvement in symptoms. The chances of healing in the field of child rheumatology are 50%.
