  • Speaker: Dr. Florian Auer
  • Title: Using FHIR in Biomedical Informatics

Dr. rer. nat. Florian Auer from University of Augsburg will talk about Using FHIR in Biomedical informatics. He states that; Interoperability in healthcare refers to the seamless exchange of electronic health data between disparate healthcare information systems, where data can be communicated and interpreted consistently, regardless of the source system's format or vendor. Building upon established web standards, Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) bundle specifications for data standards and interfaces for exchanging electronic healthcare data, and also form the basis for the standardized and machine-readable data objects stored within the electronic patient record (elektronische Patientenakte, ePA). However, interoperability is often only seen as a bulk export of data, or interoperable interfaces are created but rarely used directly. Furthermore, molecular genetic data is of growing importance in diagnostics and need to be documented accordingly, either within an interoperable system or ultimately the ePA. The talk will examine FHIR as an interoperability standard from both bioinformatics and medical informatics perspectives, also with a perspective on its role within the ePA.
