The course for the Community Medicine elective in the clinical track ties in thematically with the knowledge gained in the preclinical track. The elective aims to work in depth on methodological aspects of community medicine in particular, in order to be able to critically analyze different forms and concepts of care. Moreover, adjacent cross-cutting areas and disciplines will be linked in an interdisciplinary manner, highlighting the position of community medicine as a multidisciplinary discipline. Through the accompanying independent scientific work on self-selected questions, the theoretical knowledge should find practical application. This should enable students to integrate the holistic perspective of health and disease into their medical practice.

The seminar will be divided into four learning blocks:

  • Theoretical and methodological foundations of community medicine
  • Health care of the population
  • Evaluation and quality assurance
  • New media in community medicine

Lerning objectives

The learning objectives address different levels of learning. The process is divided into two levels:

  • At the level of knowledge: students acquire a theoretical understanding of the relevant complex of topics from a holistic perspective.
  • At the level of skill development: Students learn to critically analyze their own medical knowledge horizon in terms of knowledge stocks and gaps. The comprehensive examination of the many factors influencing health and disease lays the foundation for interdisciplinary thinking and action. In addition, at the end of the course, students are able to plan their own scientific study.

Procedure

This course is designed to provide students with selected topics in the areas of health care delivery and new approaches to medicine through projects conducted by the Institute of Community Medicine. Each topic is introduced against a theoretical background and explained and discussed in depth using a project from the corresponding department of the Institute. In addition, students work independently on scientific tasks in the seminars, dealing with scientific publications, the formulation of hypotheses or a concrete case number calculation, among other things.

The seminars are offered alternately by the departments of the institute. In addition, there is an introductory session and a final discussion, including presentation of the examination performance by the students.

The following table shows an overview of past elective topics. All departments of the institute as well as the German Center for Neurogenerative Diseases (DZNE) impart the theoretical knowledge on the basis of currently conducted research projects. The students work independently on the tasks assigned to them as part of the examination performance "Creation of an own study plan" parallel to the courses.

Regular and active participation in the seminars is required. As part of the examination, students prepare a written study plan to answer a self-selected question and present it orally to their fellow students as well as to the lecturers of the elective in the final course (paper, presentation, scientific poster).
